For writing, do you consider the original four seasons or CLE canon?

A tumblr user (itslaurafool, who, kudos to her, makes a lot of thoughtful and interesting posts if you guys ever want to check her CL posts out) brought up a really good question: do we consider CLE to be part of the original series or its own series? The main consensus was that we could consider it to be both.

That got me thinking though, for writing, which world are you going to use? Obviously CLE would be considered the most updated version of the show and could be considered what is "canon", but characters like Milly and Tamiya are no longer there. Sissi has smaller role, it seems like. There's a new character named Laura. William is a good guy and seems to be less eager and rash on Lyoko (well, no wonder, considering what happened to him). There's also the fact that two of the sectors are gone now, and Lyoko looks a bit different.

I think I'm going to mash the two worlds together since I love the thought of the source codes, and they seem like they could make interesting plot points in writing, but Sissi was one of my favourite characters and I can't bear the thought of not giving her a bigger role, actually, than she even had in seasons one through four.

What are your guys' thoughts?

I will consider CLE canon, but will most likely use the original world, with the exception that I may add new characters (like Laura) and, maybe the new sector, though with season 1-3 outfits. Sorta a total mashup, but I will NOT be using the new looks of the actors.

As much as I think they're great, Odd will always have a prominent spike of blond hair, Yumi will be taller than Ulrich, Jeremie will be the second shortest, ect...

I'd probably do a mash up as well. I agree with Kelly, Sissi was one of my favourite characters and she's part of one of my favourite couples, I don't like the idea of just forgetting about her or leaving her out all together. As for including Laura, I can't really make an opinion on that until I've seen her.

I think I'd leave Lyoko the same, until we've seen and learnt a bit more about this new sector at least and I thought it was nice to have a change of scenery within Lyoko with the different sectors.

I think I'd stick with the old looks as well, maybe a couple of changes. Aelitas clothes in Evolution are definitely my favourite out of all her outfits so I might keep those.

I'd go with pure CLE. Cause, it's a unique change and a very good change in the season's canon. And, I like to take a unique turn in fan fiction and I think CLE canon is a lot more interesting, dramatic, in-depth, and more.

Seasons 1-4 are canon for me for the most part, mostly regarding characters, dress, and Lyoko designs (I mean that broadly), but I do plan to add adaptations into CLE into Readon. (Now I just have to actually write it. -.-)

The choice seems fairly exclusive, but imo there's no reason to not add it to the CL series.

Eh, it depends on what I'm writing to be honest. If I'm writing something that takes place in season 2, obviously nothing after that is going mentioned. My fics usually take place within certain seasons so it just depends on when it falls.

The exception is going to be the fic that I'm hoping to revive...it took place after the shutdown of the supercomputer at the end of season 4. So, for all purposes, CL:E isn't going to be thought of as cannon for that fic.

Overall, however, CL:E is cannon to the original series. Overall I will consider it completely cannon, including the look of the new characters. (As far as Yumi being taller than Ulrich...well they are growing up. Boys hit their growth spurts about the age that Ulrich is in CL:E is taking place so it's only makes sense that he's now taller than Yumi. At least, that's what I'm going with.)

As for Sissi, just because she doesn't have a huge role (or any role at this point in the series) doesn't mean that she's not there. So until otherwise noted, Sissi is still at Kadic we just haven't seen her (or many of the other secondary characters) yet.

I think we need to wait for more epps to come out before we officially stamp the CANNON sticker over the front cover of the show.

This is probably a bad answer, but I’ll probably wait & see what FFN/the fandom decides. If a separate section shows up for CLE, then I’ll consider it to be two different “worlds.” Otherwise, CLE continues where CL ended, so I’ll consider it to be Season 5…

The only thing I know for sure is that I’ll probably not write anything based on CLE (except possibly a one shot or a drabble) until all the episodes are out…It’s just easier for me to plan my story line that way…

I really do hope that FFN doesn't decide to separate it. I have a feeling that if they do, fans might be less likely to look at the CL:E section rather than "Code: Lyoko".

And, fawkes, I understand what you're saying, but I already consider it Season 5 and thus cannon. That's the way I thought about it since they announced it so it's going to be hard to change my mind about it. *shrug*

I think the only way that could happen would be if CLE contradicts CL or if the directors/writers state it's not.

Depends when the story is set, for me. Currently I'll be considering CL 1-4 as my main point of reference for canon, especially as CLE is still unfolding.

Generally though, I'll cherry-pick my favourite parts from each series.

Well, so far, I don't know if anything can prevent it from being canon. I mean, the storyline itself picks up where season 4 left off, the characters look as much like the cartoon characters as you can get with live actors, and as far as I know, nothing has contradicted the original series this far. About the only thing that's really different is the sound of their voices but a.) that doesn't always translate well to writing, and b.) we haven't heard the English voices for them yet anyway.

I would agree with Cya...I think the only way that it wouldn't be considered canon is if this contradicts the original series or if the production crew has said that it's not canon. I don't see that happening any time soon.

This kind of thing is tricky though because I've never seen this happen in a show before (animated show ends, stays dormant for years, then is revived as a live-action) so I'm not sure there's a real precedent for this sort of thing. Bottom line I guess with this is that it's going to be up to the individual authors to decide if CL:E is canon or not. To me, it's canon.

^What Quin said. The only confusion will be if something contradicts or retcons the original series, in which case the writers have to make up their mind, or cast aside their old speculations and consider them AU.

I'm confident it will be canon to me.

I think the confusion is coming from the fact that it’s called Code Lyoko Evolution, not just simply Code Lyoko. Nobody really knows whether or not this is considered a new show, or if it’s just a new name for Season 5 (I haven’t watched it in a long time, but I know Winx Club gives each season a name…)

Yeah that's a good point. The fact that it's called "Code Lyoko Evolution" instea of just "Code Lyoko" really seems to be throwing everyone off.

It depends on what i'm writing. my current project, an AU it doesn't really matter. but if something comes up and I want to I will use CLE as cannon. as of right now, I'm on the fence. If it can be pulled off, then yeah, its a great source of new plot points, but it come back to my sense of nostalgia about the first seasons.
