#24, Blink
It was funny how life could change so fast.
Aelita blinked. There was a blond haired boy with glasses
gawking at her. It was only after a few moments that he managed to choke out, “Hello.”
She blinked again and was surrounded by monsters, fighting
alongside Ulrich and Odd.
Another blink, another scene pulled out of her flashing
life. She was curled up on her bed, sobbing from a nightmare.
Aelita blinked a few more times. So much had happened since
he’d rescued her from the supercomputer.
And, to Aelita, it had happened in the blink of an eye.
#22, Hunger
Aelita watched as Jeremy’s hands flew over the keyboard. He
was immersed in his work, as usual—the only sounds in the room were their quiet
breathing and the clicks of the keyboard.
A loud growling noise decided to break the silence.
“What was that?” Aelita asked immediately, frightened.
Jeremy swiveled in his chair, grinning at the girl. “I think
that was you.”
Aelita looked down at her stomach. “Why would I make that
noise?”
“Stomachs growl when people are hungry,” Jeremy explained. “Are
you?”
Aelita blushed
slightly. “Starving.”
“Well, we’d better get to lunch before Odd eats
it all then.”
#23, The Delmas knows
Odd snuck outside. Left foot, right. Quiet breathing. Quiet
everything.
He repeated to himself as he made his way to the cafeteria. Odd
wanted a midnight snack—he knew where Rosa kept her brownies.
But when tiptoed through the cafeteria, his toe was stubbed on
a chair. It skid across the floor as the light flicked on.
“Oh, Mr. Delmas! I was just, uh, checking something. Bye!”
Odd was out the door before he had finished.
Catching Odd is easy, for the Delmas always knows—or maybe
it had something to do with the brownie hidden behind his back.
#21, I'd Rather Not Talk About it
“You were the disco king, Jim?”
He was. Jim had been the absolute best—he was at the top of
a lot of things he did. But if he answered Odd’s question, then Odd just might
ask about his other “adventures”, which he’d rather not—couldn’t—talk about.
Then Odd would push, and Jim would have to push back, or his
cover could be compromised. The mission would end in a flop, and his superiors
would be furious.
So, without saying a word, Jim turned around and left his “I’d
rather not talk about it” hanging in the air unsaid.
And because I have camp nano to do, must stop here :I

#16 Resolution
The day he graduated from Kadic, he made himself a promise. He wasn’t the same he had been years earlier (though if you asked anyone else, they might deny that notion).
He promised he would be there when other needed him.
He promised he would stop being so selfish.
He promised he would think about the consequences of his actions.
He promised he would do anything for the people he cared about.
Nine years later, William Dunbar is the only person who sees the signs and the only person who takes a journey to the factory by his old school.
#17 Last Call
“We will find you!” Ulrich shouted into the phone. There’s a silence and he can practically see Odd’s head shake.
“Remember to feed Kiwi.”
Then the line is disconnected.
They never did find him. But the thing that troubles Ulrich the most is that they don’t know how. And they don’t know why.
Some days, when he’s feeling particularly sorry for himself, he believes that something happened. Blackmail, kidnapping, threats, witness protection.
But the days where he’s being honest with himself, he believes that maybe they never knew him, maybe Odd just ran away. Like Kiwi did a month later.
#21 I’d Rather Not Talk About It
The first person Jim ever loved was a beautiful girl he met at a supermarket one morning.
They were both in their twenties but acted like teenagers. It was perfect.
Two weeks before he’s planning on proposing, she gets a job offer, one that she can’t (and he won’t let her) turn down.
They tried, but it didn’t quite work out so they tentatively broke up.
Neither has dated since and Jim refuses to tell anyone about his adventures until after she has heard them, face to face.
The day after the Lyoko Warriors graduate, she gets transferred to France.
#27 Your Tale
One day, Sissi follows Ulrich to the factory and no one ever knows.
Out of sight, out of mind
She doesn’t understand what they’re talking about, but after a few more of her “trips” she begins to understand- piece by piece.
She learns enough to send herself to Lyoko one night.
It’s like nothing she’s ever felt before.
She feels alive, complete, powerful. She runs around, goes through all four sectors and falls in love with each one of them, before eventually grabbing her weapon and taking herself out.
They never find out.
What you don’t know won’t hurt you.

Turning Tides
X.A.N.A. was in nothingness. The supercomputer was off.
He was gradually building power.
Lyoko was off, Hopper’s daughter unconscious inside.
Soon, he’d complete his power surge, and turn on the supercomputer. Then humanity would die. Nothing could stop him. He was so close…
Then, the supercomputer was turned on. But X.A.N.A. could just eliminate the one who knew and continue his plan.
He would never guess that this boy who turned on the supercomputer was willing to fight back. And able to fight back.
The moment the supercomputer was turned on, X.A.N.A. lost his edge.
The tides had been turned.
X.A.N.A. was in nothingness. The supercomputer was off.

Jeremy slammed his fist down on the keyboard in irritation
and in relief. He hated when they gave him heart attacks like that.
“Okay, deactivate the tower before more monsters show up.”
“Jeez, Einstein. You sound worried.”
“I am.” Jeremy’s voice was shaking. Aelita had almost gotten
thrown into the digital sea, once again.
“I don’t know why when you’ve got awesome fighters like me.”
Jeremy sighed. He’d almost lost her, again and again. One
moment they were surrounded by monsters, winning hopeless. The next, the tides
had turned, and his princess was safe.
Just until the tides turned
again.

She finds him by chance when the school years, long over, have taken friendship's close ties with them. He's almost unrecognisable, blond hair cropped short, but something alights in those slightly bloodshot eyes.
He turns from the ring on her finger, a sparkling reminder of one success that evades him, and the smart business suit, another.
Ever tactful, she doesn't ask what changed, what life did to their resident joker to steal his laughter. Instead she says something flippant, inconsequential, and he smiles faintly though she doesn't think he even heard it.
But she is glad to see him, too.

Milly took two more steps into the eerie room and gaped. “What…what is this place?”
From her position at the door, Tamiya slowly shook her head in shock. “I don’t know, but you shouldn’t go any further, it could be dangerous.”
“We’re reporters,” Milly said as she bent down to examine the small hole by the wall. “There’s something down here,” she shouted. She stuck her flashlight in her teeth and climbed down. “Lots of wires and three weird pod things.”
When she climbed back up a minute later, her face was alight with excitement.
“We’ve got ourselves a scoop!”

The two figures faced off under the hot sun.
Hands itching toward guns, their prize, a beautiful, raven haired woman, standing behind the brunette.
His opponent: an arrogant, dark haired man.
Two shots rang out, though not from the duelers…
At one end, their sought after prize stood, a smoking gun in hand.
At the other end, an armed stranger, his cutting blue eyes showing above his bandana.
“You came here to win me as your prize,” she asked.
“You don’t have to be won.”
The two faced each other for a moment.
“Then we have an agreement,” she said.

“Sherriff Stern.” He laughed- a condescending, belittling sound.
Ulrich Stern, however, held his ground. His face remained impassive as his eyes scanned the seemingly abandoned town that just an hour ago had been bustling with life and activity.
“Odd Della Robbia.”
Odd sent him a cheeky smile and Ulrich growled. This wasn’t his first standoff. But it may be first one where he snapped and shot before the other man even had his hand on the gun.
Odd picked up his gun and Ulrich moved his fingers to a comfortable firing position.
In the end, neither of them fired though.

“Hey lil' lady.”
She scowled and pointedly ignored him. Blistering sun had left her face pink as her hair; dust from the sandy ground clung stubbornly to her boots. He stuck out, a sore thumb, purple against the desert landscape.
“Not a talker, eh?” He shrugged, tipping back the brim of his Stetson. “You know, you kinda remind me o' someone. She'd not travel these parts alone though. It's dangerous for a-”
Her hand flew to her holster. Pulling the trigger three times in quick succession she left him, wordlessly, with three bullet holes through his hat.

# 30 - Computer Codes and Fans
When he finds her on the couch he doesn’t say anything-- she’s let herself
in before. His dorm. His apartment. His office. Ulrich used to call
early in the morning to see if she was there. If there was a fight. If
there was fallout.
They were just too similar, and if it was fight or flight she ran-- and she
ran to Jeremie. Not to his bed. Not to his arms. Just his couch, the
bedroom floor if it was bad. Just to his company-- safety. She was the
warrior, but he was her safe harbor.
He was home.
When he finds her on the couch he doesn’t say anything-- she’s let herself
in before. His dorm. His apartment. His office. Ulrich used to call
early in the morning to see if she was there. If there was a fight. If
there was fallout.

Yet, here she was.
She waited years for him to finish college (even he couldn’t cut the time it took to get a PhD). She waited for him every single time he went to London or Hong Kong or Tyoko or even Las Vegas. (Though, to be fair, she had accompanied him on a fair share of his Las Vegas trips- not because she didn’t trust him, but she just couldn’t resist the temptation of the strip).
And then, when he disappeared, she waited for him to come home.
Yet, here she was.

They didn't know why, but they knew it was meant to be this way.
The program turned from his master's computer to find the other sitting on his bed, a tessen fan concealing her face.
"Hey, sugarpie," he grinned.
"Hey," she whispered.
In a nearly imperceptible flash of motion and air, he was suddenly with her on the bed, a similar tessen fan also pressed to his face.
Forehead against forehead, computer code against computer code, fan against fan.
After ten seconds, lips against lips.
She took his fan. He took her to the forest. Together they went on adventures.

Watched him through his triumphs, and trials
Saw his eyes go from lonely, to excited, to determined, to exhausted…
Aelita was his purpose in life, but she had become tired of that role.
Now his eyes were dead.
She wished she had the bravery and strength, to be strong for him.
Next to his hospital bed, she realized it shouldn’t have taken him almost dying for her to realize she did.
“Jeremie,” she whispered. “I promise, I’ll be there for you, from now on.”
Deep inside him, her words lit a spark of hope.

Yumi sprawled on the bed, chin hanging over the mattress edge as she watched intently. A concertina-fold of paper fanned cool air onto her face and she turned it absently in Jérémie's direction, grinning as wisps of his blond air drifted in the faint breeze.
Jérémie barely noticed. Cross-legged on the floor, he bent over his latest contraption and with absolute focus slotted a minute microchip perfectly into place. At last he gave a satisfied stretch, looked up and returned the smile.
It was a peaceful summer, shared gladly, and defined by a love of quiet contemplation and companionable silence.

"Five. Four. Three. Two. One."
Where "zero" should have been, there was the sound of a booming cannon, and suddenly a flurry of movement. The purple elf had to go somewhere, away from where she knew the bloodbath would take place.
It was too late. Monsters started pouring out of the trees like sand and immediately took off after her. Wolves howled, and there was the sound of their friends screaming in response. Suddenly, the face of her loved one was seen, bloodied and terrified. He screamed, until he too started gnashing with pointed teeth.
Aelita woke with a scream.

#31 - Dreams
The thing with being a clone is, it's difficult to have aspirations.
Thrown into the world with a handful of memories, 'William' adapts, in his own strange way, to living someone else's life. He finds food, people, entertainment he likes; the future is not a concept to be processed.
And then it is over as suddenly as it began. He feels himself dissolving to nothingness, with no time to feel the complete, heavy weight of his regret.
The thing with being a clone, especially a hastily programmed, easily expendable one, is that no one really recognises your desire to live.

31: Dream
Dreams are an interesting concept.
A scream erupts somewhere in the halls of Kadic Academy. I
almost wish I had the sense—the humans referred to it as hearing—so that I
could experience it more clearly.
But I can feel it. When dreaming, humans sometimes react and
feel as normally as they do in reality.
What is it like to dream? I wonder only briefly, feeling another
scream of terror. It gives me another not quite real “feeling”. Pleasure, I
believe. So I experiment, sending my own dream that isn’t as pleasant.
You can thank me for your nightmares.

#31: Dream
Mostly she dreams of school. It’s really everything-- her social life, her
education, her father’s job, her home. It leaks into her head at night.
It would only make sense that it would.
Sometimes she dreams of her friends, of Ulrich. Her not so secret dream of kisses
and dates and getting what she wants. She usually gets what she wants,
even in her dreams.
But there are other times when she had less control and she dreams of her
mother. She brushes her hair, and she’s humming and everything is warm
and safe again.
Those dreams are the worst.
Mostly she dreams of school. It’s really everything-- her social life, her

Odd’s eyes shoot open.
They immediately latch onto Ulrich, but not because they’re friends. Odd doesn’t know why Ulrich is featured in his dreams, or Ishiyama, or even Belpois. The girl is easier to explain- Taelia. His on-again, off-again girlfriend.
He’s been having the dreams of Lyoko since the first day he arrived at Kadic, when the corner of his eye caught light reflecting off the factory in the distance.
The dreams don’t occur nightly, but when they do, they are eerily realistic. It’s time to get to the bottom of this.
In the darkness, he sneaks to the factory.

It wasn't my fault XANA took control of me.
As Aelita has pointed out so many times, XANA took control of her, and they still trust her. So what if it is because she has the Keys to Lyoko? The fact is, she has been given every second chance that has arisen for every time she messed up.
I mess up once, with drastic effects, and they can't even look at me in a friendly way anymore.
She thinks I should try again.
All I want to do is wring that bastard XANA's neck for what he stole from me.

“We said he could choose any dog he wanted.”
“But it's so... scrawny. And weird ...Like someone else I could name, ha ha.”
“Adele!”
“Sorry.”
“Dad, can I get him, Dad, please?”
“Are you sure, Odd?”
“Positive.”
“Hmph. Only Odd could love such a mangy rescue dog.”
“Right. So if I don't, who will?

I... wasn’t supposed to have a second chance.
Jeremy clutched his shirt, hunching over in his chair. His heart thudded frantically against his chest—he
wondered whether it had somehow continued from the return to the past or just
from the shock of near death.
It was disconcerting to be free falling one moment, then sitting peacefully in your room the next.
I shouldn't be alive.
But he was. Jeremy had been given the return to the past—a second chance. He couldn’t help but feel
guilty, knowing that there was another boy just like him that hadn’t been given
the same chance.

He just wants to see his little girl’s face again—always this thought as white light engulfs all.
The light fades—Franz sits behind the computer, fingers typing codes he hadn’t finished when the return-trip kicked in.
My second chance, he used to think as time reversed.
He’s long since stopped thinking it’s a blessing—he’s looping in time and he’ll never see her again.
He’s a wanted man, and his actions are noble, but he’s also a father and the saddest truth is this:
He’s ruined the first chance. He’s trapped in the second.
He’ll never get a third.
He just wants to see his little girl’s face again—always this thought as white light engulfs all.

In hindsight, empty buildings tend not to stay that way for long.
The next time, it won’t be an awkward preteen, scrapping for parts. It will be a group of drunk and high teenagers, hiding from the public eye in the dark shadows of a vacant factory.
They’ll turn on the computer and laugh about it, and think it’s all a video game, until the next morning, when they’re sober. They realize what they’ve done when one of them is taken by a possessed car and another by the riots. But it’ll be too late.
XANA won’t waste this chance.

33- The Road Not Taken
He’ll move onto a more advanced school (he has no friends; there’s no reason to stay) and make Franz’s
mistake (“An AI seemed like a good idea at the time!”)
She’ll move back to Japan (new jobs, new locations) and study martial arts.
He’ll lose his laughter (this breakup hit him hard)
He’ll befriend a raven-haired delinquent (they’ll be in jail before the end of high school)
She’ll sit (neither awake nor asleep), dormant, like the supercomputer (it was never turned on) she
resides in.
It’ll stand for a year before being torn down.
(It’s just an old factory)
