RF: In honor of shark week: Tiger Sharks can only give birth to two pups at the most, because the first pup to hatch inside the womb devours its fellow unborn until only two remain on each side of the womb.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: Back in the civil war and sometime afterwards, barbers didn't only cut hair, they also used bone saws to perform amputations. This is why they were also called surgeons.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: I donated blood today.
RF: The needle stick hurt because I've apparently built up scar tissue from all my previous donations from that vein.
RF: Also my pulse was abnormally high.
RF: My mom's dragging me to the doctor tomorrow morning.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: Abnormally high pulses may come from the fact that YOU HAD A NEEDLE IN YOUR ARM TAKING YOUR BLOOD! Other than that I have no idea why your heart would be pumping faster than usual.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: This was at the pre-donation screening, not while I was in the chair with the needle in my arm.
RF: I've given blood before, and all my pulse readings were in the 60s and 70s and maybe once in the low 80s until the one with 92.
RF: My mom is convinced it's a thyroid disorder. She was turned down from donating blood when she was a teenager for her pulse being too high, and she later found out she had hyperthyroidism and Graves' Disease.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: I'm really sorry to hear that
RF: I didn't mean to sound the way I did while talking, I was just trying to make a joke.
RF: Blood is red when exposed to oxygen because of the iron in the hemoglobin. The iron literally rusts turning red and then unrusts (is that a word?) as the oxygen leaves. When not exposed to oxygen, the blood turns blue.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: I wasn't sure, but okay.
RF: I'm not terribly worried. I made a huge deal about it on Tumblr, but that's because it's Tumblr.
RF: I'm convinced it's because I've been a lazy bum all summer long.
RF: If I do have hyperactive thyroid, then basically all I have to do is take a radioactive iodine pill. And if they overshoot on the radiation, then I'll just have to take Synthroid for the rest of my life. And that's not so bad.
Re: RF: That's why veins are blue and arteries are red. Veins are what the blood travels through after it's been deoxygenated.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: Snickie is one smart cookie! ^_^
RF: She is absolutely correct.
RF: Arteries are high pressure blood vessels, while veins are low pressure vessels. There is a connection piece between them called the capillary bed which safely depressurizes the blood into the veins. An AMV is when there is no capillary bed between an artery and a vein, this will eventually lead to a massive hemorrhage as the connection burst after 30-50 years on average. If in the brain, this will lead to a severe stroke that is usually fatal.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: Snickie is not going to tell No.1JerlitaFan which college she's attending.
RF: I leave on Saturday.
RF: Went to the doc's today. Since I have basically today and tomorrow to get as much work done as possible, she ordered bloodwork to be taken immediately and the results sent to her STAT. (She actually wrote that on the bloodwork order.)
RF: After a super long wait in the office at the blood center place we were escorted to a room with some scary-looking stuff, and I got stuck with a 21-gauge needle to take three vials. But she literally yanked the tourniquet tie off my arm while the needle was still in my arm, and it caused this really weird pain, and then after she took the needle out she taped a piece of gauze to my arm.
RF: I go back tomorrow. If it's thyroid, then I'll get referred to an endocrinologist and I'll probably go find one in the town where my college is and, if necessary, get surgery to remove part of my thyroid around Christmas break. And we'll spend most of the rest of the day at the beach in Bradenton.
RF: If it's not thyroid, then she's going to order an EKG and possibly a physical fitness test (EKG and oxygen breathing thing shoved in your mouth while you run on a treadmill until you're so exhausted you can hardly move), and possibly send me to a cardiologist STAT, which is a far scarier option.
RF: My pulse today was 108 at the office.
RF: When my mom took my pulse after I'd taken a nap and was still on the couch kind of trying to go back to sleep, she counted 82 beats in a minute. It probably didn't help that I randomly flinched since you're not supposed to count for a whole minute and I was like, "Let me have my arm back." But still. It shouldn't be that high.
RF: So yeah. Interesting stuff.
RF: My roommate seems like a potential neat freak. Potentially.

RF: No.1JerlitaFan is sad now.
RF: No.1JerlitaFan understands why Snickie doesn't want to say what college, he understands.
RF: A neat freak roommate is good, it means that she'll do all your cleaning for you.

Re: Random Facts: August 2013
RF: I may or may not let everyone know on here what college I go to.
RF: I'm a little paranoid about what I put on certain parts of the internet.
RF: I hope I have fun in college too, though!
RF: Jue, high school can be fun and annoying as crap at the same time. You'll be fine though ( : I was a freshman mentor last year when I was a senior.
RF: Shark teeth are covered in fluoride, making them cavity resistant.
