Vae Victus (a Fruits Basket fanfiction)
Disclaimer: I do not own Fruits Basket. The canon characters will come into play later on in the story, first you will meet Raja, Serabhi, and Rostem, who belong to me.
Vae Victus
I am Raja.
I am also a mistake.
My mother was betrothed to the son of a rich entrepreneur, whose family had come to India for business. They were married at the tender age of sixteen, as was the tradition. When my mother became pregnant, there were prayers sung nightly, hourly, for a son.
They were answered in the form of my older brother, Rostem.
Innocence is granted to every child. My brother was robbed of his. As the first born son, Rostem was given every need he could ever want. He became a pugnacious brat. His demand insatiable, and encouraged by a doting father.
Then I came into the world. But I was born out of love, not bondage.
My mother fell in love with an Irishman, who was writing a book about life in India. She could not read, so he brought the words on his pages to life for her with his voice. He captivated her, drawing her further to him with every passing day. The affair remained a secret, until my mother's husband lay eyes on my shock of red hair.
He beat my mother, who was never permitted to speak the name of her lover, my father.
"Ungrateful *****!"
He shouted words at my mother whose meanings were lost on me. But as a small child shaking in the corner of a dark room, I knew they were evil.
I thought I was evil as well. I thought that was why my father's belt was whipped across the marred flesh of my back every day. I knew I was a sin, and because of that my brother beat me with sticks during the small amount of time I was allowed outside.
"You must never think that."
My mother whispered to me softly, tears flowing from her eyes, that it was not my fault.
But it was.
I am a mistake.
I am also Raja.
I am not meant to be.
