Before I start this review, is it possible to add some images of the episode during the review to make it look more professional/brighter? And they have to be pretty small too, like they won't need enlarging or take up a whole line or anything like that. Thanks.

Code Lyoko Season 1 Episode 3: Holiday in the Fog

In today’s episode, school break! However, Jeremie doesn’t want to take a break from his marterialization program, and Sissi’s determined to find his secret. Also, Ulrich gets major respect points for one selfless action.

This episode introduces new characters, while develops a lot on Sissi and Jim. While it’s nice to develop characters, it would be fantastic if viewers got to know more of the main characters. Anyway, a new character is Kiwi, Odd’s pet dog. He’s there to wake up Jim, where somehow he runs past where Jeremie is spray painting a demented picture of Jim, to get in trouble on purpose and to not be permitted his week’s break from school. It works to a charm.

Sissi and her cronies, who have happened to overheard the Lyoko Warriors’ conversation, grow suspicious of how Jeremie reacted to the punishment, and of XANA. So Sissi takes it upon herself to find out what Jeremie is up to. So, wait just a second, so during the last episode, when Jeremie mentioned the Factory, and ran off, Sissi didn’t decide to follow him. But in this episode, when the group mentions XANA, Sissi decides to do something about it. Considering that her father is the principal of Kadic Academy, wouldn’t Sissi be suspicious that Jeremie is breaking the rules by heading outside Kadic Academy, instead of talking about XANA. Priorities…

Of course, as all suspicious principal’s daughters do, Sissi tries to obtain information her own way, without a lot of success. Even making a pathetic excuse to Jim which he believes probably because she mentioned her father. Although, it makes a nice introduction to the XANA attack, which involves barrels of a poisonous chemical in the school, which he somehow transforms into a gas. XANA could also make the gas disappear at will, so when Jeremie does discover the attack and attempts to show it to Jim, he makes Jeremie look like an idiot here.

Because this episode has Jeremie stuck at school with no friends around, it does mean he talks to Aelita more, mainly about XANA’s activity and the materialization program. The latter leading to revealing that Jeremie does have feelings for Aelita, and blushes when she appreciates everything he’s done for her. What a lovely scene.

There are a lot of little scenes in this episode, one of which introduces Yumi’s family. Her father seems like a very serious man, while her mother likes taking her time picking out clothes. From that scene, the viewers would know who she takes after. The other good scene is Odd at the airport, where his luggage is being scanned. When Jeremie calls him, he pretends that it was his grandmother calling after he just mentioned her to the officers and runs back to assist on Lyoko. Nice. Also, Sissi and Jim are stuck in a small room in Kadic Academy without any means of escape, with the poisonous gas waiting outside for them.

Before heading onto Lyoko though, Jeremie, in an attempt to check on Sissi and Jim, gets stopped by the poisonous gas, and ends up getting rescued by Ulrich and Yumi. When Jeremie mentions that Sissi and Jim are still in Kadic Academy with the poisonous gas, Ulrich volunteers to rescue them. No discussion, he just runs off to the building. Ulrich Stern is a hero and deserves respect for that selfless act. Yumi carries Jeremie to the Factory, but pales to what Ulrich is doing by a mile.

Speaking of who Ulrich is trying to save, Sissi opens up and reveals the reason why she’s been following their group, other than the obvious desire to find out their secret. She actually wants to join their group. This is quite a big thing; however, it doesn’t get touched again until late in the Code Lyoko series.

The Lyoko mission is in a different Sector, the Forest Sector. And viewers finally get to see Yumi’s Lyoko form. She’s a Geisha, a Japanese woman who traditionally performs to music and dance. Her weapon is a tessen fan, which is primarily used as a long range weapon, and returns to the user in a boomerang-like fashion. Her power is telekinesis, which she uses against the Krankrelats in this episode. This allows her to lift any object and use it to her advantage with her mind. Of course, if she’s lifting something for too long it exhausts her.

Since the first appearance of Odd and Ulrich’s Lyoko forms, viewers would expect Yumi to save the day. Unfortunately she doesn’t. She just shows off her power and gets devirtualized by a Krankrelat. While Odd escorts Aelita to the tower, which is surrounded by water. This allows Aelita to show off her powers, and apparently she can make platforms to reach the tower. Nice.

What happens at the tower is pretty much mere stupidity for Odd though. There was only one monster following both of them, and Odd takes five seconds to aim at it and misses. Not only that, when the Krankrelat makes it over the bridge and is about to attack Aelita, Odd grabs its attention by the power of speech, has a showdown with it, with Odd less than a metre away from the monster. They both end up destroying each other anyway. But for a long ranged fighter to be firing from less than a metre away, it’s incredibly dumb. Here’s hoping he doesn’t do it again.

The ending of the episode made a nice resolution, and apparently Ulrich had helped Jeremie with the mural of Jim and sticks behind because he hates maths tutoring. Again, taking one for the team. And while Jeremie doesn’t need to put himself through detention again, it looks like the conversation with Aelita had a huge impact on him. He has now an unshakable resolve to martialize Aelita onto Earth, and won’t stop until she is. It’s a great closing to what is another filler episode. Which had some really high moments, and had the stupidest moment in the series so far.

Score: 6/10

Loose bits:
Jim must be a really heavy sleeper. Kiwi howled right next to him, pulled his blanket off and licked his face. It takes Kiwi’s breath to wake up Jim. Jim must had a nice dream…

Nicholas sounds like he has a speech impairment because it seriously sounds like he can’t say Jeremie correctly.

As soon as Sissi walks into her father’s office, she sways her hips slightly. She doesn’t need to be seductive in front of her father to convince him to do homework over visiting grandparents.

Jeremie was a bit of a jerk when he left Sissi with cleaning the mural while Jim was out getting a sponge for her, but wouldn’t he have remembered that Jim was returning.

Speaking of Jim returning, Jeremie teleports from the sitting in the deckchair to standing up making the peace sign.

Sissi complains to Herve that she’s exhausted after trying to scrub off the mural and that it even hurts to blink. So apparently, physical labour only involving arm and back muscles could hamper Sissi’s ability to blink. That totally makes sense.

While speaking to Herve, by looking at the background, he doesn’t look like he’s in a home. Animators getting lazy to recolour a background into a homey colour?

Both Sissi and Jim run with their eyes closed. No wonder they bumped into each other.

Sissi mentions Bruce Willis in the episode, although Jeremie is barely the closest thing to the real live actor.

And the episode break with the little cutscene of the random Lyoko Warrior spoils what Yumi looks like on Lyoko. Thanks AnteFilms.

Apparently, not only does the poisonous smoke blind people, but can partially paralyse people from the waist down. And Jeremie, researching it earlier, only describes it as deadly (Causes death).

Odd makes his appearance at Kadic Academy… by jumping down from a tree. Is he secretly a ninja?

The news report that Yumi and Odd randomly watch mentions that children and the elderly should remain indoors. What about adults? The gas is poisonous, you know. And since when did the gas escape Kadic Academy school grounds?

Odd points again. To where the Krankrelats came out while everybody was looking in that direction. The girls are not blind.

Odd also has combined both his Future Flash and Laser Arrows, making an attack called Laser Flash. It works as effectively as a Laser Arrow.

Ulrich may have came to save you Sissi, but that doesn’t mean he’s only saving just you.

Odd attacks close range with a long range weapon. Words cannot describe how stupid that is.

Quotes: “If I had more time I could’ve done the eyes better.” – Jeremie

“You’d almost think he did what he did because he wanted to be punished.” – Herve

“You just did Daddy! Thank you!” – Sissi

“You get to go and see your parents at the other end of the planet. Yumi’s off for a vacation in the mountains, and what do I get, a whole week of maths tutoring.” – Ulrich

“If they think they could make a good student out of you in one week. Well, I say good luck to them. It sounds like mission impossible, if you ask me.” – Odd

“I don’t know why but, all of a sudden, my math tutoring doesn’t seem all that bad.” – Ulrich

“XANA’s… the name of a rock group. With all the junk that you listen to, there’s no way that you know them.” – Jeremie

“Oh, I ache all over I swear. I’m telling you, I never thought it was possible to be this sore. It even hurts to blink.” – Sissi

“Tonight’s the night! I’m going to play as Super Spy! I’m going to find out the secret of Jeremie and his weirdo friends.” – Sissi

“And you know it’s not the end of the world if I stay virtual for one more day.” – Aelita

“Jeremie. Thank you. Thank you for everything you’ve done.” – Aelita

“This has got to be contagious! What’s this all about smoke anyway?” – Jim

“I know three volunteers who will be happy to cut their vacation short and help.” – Jeremie

“Yes, of course I know it’s you, gram. I know you’ve told me a hundred times you don’t like me calling you gram.” – Odd

“No, I don’t really feel like laughing. Have you noticed that someone is missing in the back seat?” – Takeo (Yumi’s father)

“Jeremie! That’s pretty reassuring. It’s nice to know that the closest thing to Bruce Willis is coming to rescue us!” – Sissi

“Guess you didn’t look very hard.” – Odd

“Not as long as Aelita stays virtual.” – Jeremie

Sissi mentions Bruce Willis in the episode, although Jeremie is barely the closest thing to the real live actor.

It's called sarcasm. You could tell by how she said it.

Odd attacks close range with a long range weapon. Words cannot describe how stupid that is.

And that's called getting a better aim. After all, just because a bow can shoot far doesn't mean you should get as far away as possible.

And the episode break with the little cutscene of the random Lyoko
Warrior spoils what Yumi looks like on Lyoko. Thanks AnteFilms.

In that case, you might as well criticize the opening for spoiling the appearances of all the Lyoko Warriors right before the first episode, as well as any promos that aired before the show even started.

Jeremie was a bit of a **** when he left Sissi with cleaning the mural while Jim was out getting a sponge for her.

A bit of a nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that he was supposed to be mocking Jim, judging by the tone in his voice and the choice of words.

Speaking of Jim returning, Jeremie teleports from the sitting in the deckchair to standing up making the peace sign.

Or maybe he gets up and faces him when the scene cuts to Jim staring down at him.

The news report that Yumi and Odd randomly watch mentions that children
and the elderly should remain indoors. What about adults?

Whenever anyone makes a news report about something like that, children and elderly are always mentioned in that manner without mention of adults. Children barely watch the news and thus the adults have to make sure they're safe in case they're playing outside and they don't hear anything about it, same with the elderly who can barely fend for themselves and often need assistance. Besides, it already goes without saying for adults.

Apparently, not only does the poisonous smoke blind people, but can partially paralyse people from the waist down.

Asphyxiation is enough to render a victim immobile, now combine that with being unable to see, which it can do if it irritates the eyes. Also, it could be a nerve gas, which can affect other muscles as well as respiratory muscles.

Sissi complains to Herve that she’s exhausted after trying to scrub off the mural and that it even hurts to blink

Another minor nitpick, but look up the word hyperbole.

Jim must be a really heavy sleeper. Kiwi howled right next to him,
pulled his blanket off and licked his face. It takes Kiwi’s breath to
wake up Jim. Jim must had a nice dream…

It's possible... I slept through an aftershock once.
