Author: AeonFrodo

Summary: One devastating event sets off Ulrich on a dangerous path to self-destruction. Can his friends help him before it's too late?
Chapter: Any/All
I'm nominating this because it one of the most well-written stories I've seen in a while. It's a story that really has you on the edge of your seat and you in suspense as the story progresses.
Title: Stone's Throw Away
Author: SeeMeInTheShadows
Rated: K+
Summary: They're all on the verge of madness.
Reason for nomination: Slight copy-paste of what I said in my review for this story - it captures the tone of a subdued and melancholy day perfectly, but with a really uplifting hopeful ending. I like how it paints the friendship between the LWs and how it implicitly suggests how the fight against XANA has affected them all.
Story Title: Project Zaia

Summary: 1 year after XANA's demise and the gang shuts down the supercomputer, Franz Hopper's mysterious past launches a war for the future of Lyoko. With the French government involved, no one is safe. Serialized drama.
Reason For Nomination: This story was a fantastic read, and I really like this interpretation of the backstory. It falls under suspense and drama, I believe. This story ranks pretty high on my list of favs.

Summary: It was lonely at the top... Aelita had heard that before but never really understood what that meant until now. OxAxJ
Chapter (if applicable): oneshot
Reason For Nomination: This is a really sad angsty story. It really sums up the jobs that Jeremie and Aelita have on Lyoko, and the effects the others have. It shows how hard their job is, and how much relies on them.
Title: Resentment (one-shot)
Author: AeonFrodo
Rating: K+
Summary: There's no words to describe my horrible life. But there are some people that deserve the blame, some more than others.
Reason: I can't believe I've never read this before, but there I was, browsing the angst genre, and I found this. It's a tad depressing, but at the same time, this could almost be canon. You can imagine William feeling this way, because why wouldn't he? In the end, he really did get the short end of the stick. It was very realistic. The way Aeon told this was also great. It wasn't heavy on description, but honestly, that was what the story needed. It was matter-of-fact without getting too heavy on the description. And even though it was matter-of-fact, it wasn't shoving all the facts in your face...Aeon was just giving us a story untold. The nicest part was that it is also one of the lightest angsts I've ever read. Resentment isn't about death or near-fatal injuries, but it is about the metaphorical loss of a life, in that William had very little control of his life. I really liked that.

Summary: Kiwi died and Odd is thinking about him and about life.
Reason For Nomination: To be honst, I'm not relly a huge fan of angst...but this one's relly good. If you have a dog in yor life, this one will hit you prtty hard...

Re: Best Angst
Hmm... the thing with this category is I'm not sure how well some of the fics lend themselves to the genre. Pretty Hate Machine and Project: ZAIA are great reads but I'd have placed them more in action/drama/general. The angst isn't the focal point, the fics just happen to have angsty moments.
For that reason - which is kind of a poor reason but at the same time, I'm after anything to help narrow down my decision-making since this is so difficult - I'm going to have to say no to both of those.
Lonely at the Top is certainly angsty but the writing just wasn't all that great to me. There was a lot of 'show not tell', basically "this happened then this happened then this happened" and I just feel like... I guess there could have been more emotion written into it, for the content and the genre? I do like the take on the characters though, and the ambiguous ending. Not a bad fic by any means but one that, for me, fell a little short of its potential.
I enjoyed Life Goes On more than I thought I would to be honest! Pleasantly surprised. The subject matter was something I've never seen addressed before and the writer really got into Odd's head. I'm not even going to lie, I did tear up a bit at the end. There were some really nice, powerful lines in there too. " I know they're right, Jeremie and Ulrich, life does go in, but that doesn't mean that I want it to." Awww.
I think all in all though, Stone's Throw Away is my favourite. I've read it more than once and it still resonates with me, and I just really, really like it. Definitely angsty but with a satisfying ending and spot-on characterisation. My 'Honourable Mention' is Life Goes On though, for sure, and I wouldn't mind if that won either.

Re: Best Angst
I cannot tell you guys how many times I was "going to post soon" or "writing up a post at this minute". But I'm finally sitting myself down, and going through the fics in order. And because this is the last category, I'm literally forcing myself to comment with a paragraph on each of them. ...Yeah.
- Commenting Mode Activate:
- Pretty Hate Machine: This one is tricky to categorise. Ulrich's angst is the starting point of the problems in the story, but the thing is, his angst is exactly what fuels the action that have ramifications that have considerably less to do with his feelings. I'll take a leaf out of SJ's book and agree that it isn't the best example of what angst truly is. Subjective opinion, but the actions and consequences of said actions in PHM, while wonderfully written, are what drive the story.
Stone's Throw Away: This isn't in-your-face angst, and I like that. There weren't tragic deaths, life-changing accidents, or horrifying injuries. It was an exploration of the characters at their lowest points, and it worked. I think Jeremie's part could've been a bit smoother and Aelita could've had more elaboration, but in end, it came together really nicely. I always love it when authors do their own take on a theme, such as the theme of "madness" that was seen here.
Project Zaia: The categorisation of this one is a bit more clear-cut than PHM's. Personally, I'd put it in the action or drama category, one of the categories the nominator suggested (I'm don't get why he posted it in with the angst nominations, heh). Personally, I didn't like the pacing that much and how there were so many blocks of text in a row. Nevertheless, I think it falls firmly under the drama or action category.
Lonely At The Top: I want to preface this: I like the idea a lot, and the title and summary combined got my excited to read this. And OxAxJ love triangle? I'm all for drama and angst, so long as this was actually a correctly categorised story. I ended up not enjoying it that much though, since I usually prefer stories with a bit of dialogue in them. The real deal breaker, though, is the way it's written. I feel like I'm scanning their lives, but in a completely apathetic way. The writer isn't bad, but this isn't the type of fic for me, I guess.
Resentment: I'm not sure why, but this is one of the few fics where I was okay about having so little dialogue. It wasn't necessarily the most active or interesting fic, but I liked the take on William's thoughts. As human beings, we're fragile, and even though William fans might not like what this fic implies, I think it has an element of truth to it. He's not a bad person, but after getting possessed for months on end, no one is going to get out unscarred. I think this fic suggests more than William is a broken person, rather than a bad person as some people might interpret it as. However, I do admit that it's definitely on the drier side and isn't the most easy fic to get through. An interlude of his thoughts using more dialogue would've made it more enjoyable and easy to get through, I think.
Life Goes On: I'm not sure what it is, but this fic doesn't quite "do it" for me. For an event as tragic to Odd and the group as Kiwi's death, I thought it'd be different. I was looking for more on the group dynamics and how they'd support each other even though Odd would obviously feel more lonely in his pain. The second chapter shows a bit of it, but I don't think it was that well done. Snowy does touch on this a bit in the first chapter, but it was more focused on Odd's feelings. There's nothing wrong with this, since she did show how he was having trouble focusing and how it was just so hard to concentrate on his school work when Kiwi has just died, but it didn't quite have the effect on me that I think it was.

Life Goes On. Period. It was just overall, fantastic. The others to me were meh. I'm being honest here, Life Goes On, for me, stole the show. Just pure angst.
