Status Effects
One of the formal definitions for buffing was a piece of material often used to polish something.
Since then, the term has also been adapted to video games to describe a boost in status to a person or thing. The same has been done with its versa, debuff.
Buffs:
In the Arena there is only one technical buff: Blessed. However, what the blessing actually does depends on the specific ability.
Being blessed is defined as having something cast on you that has a positive effect.
Debuffs:
In contrast to buffing, there are many different kinds of debuffs. However, they each have a specific effect on you.
Here are the different sort of Debuffs you can encounter:
Debuffs can be countered by a certain stat. What that means is that when that debuff is on you, every turn afterwards you're allowed to roll the respective stat to see if you can remove the debuff from yourself. Be warned though, some debuffs can't be countered, and some require a very high roll to succeed. As such, having items to support you, like Antidotes, should not be neglected if you suspect debuffs to occur.
Exhausted appears at 0 energy and reduces all stats by 40%. Vanishes as soon as you regain energy.
Burnt deals little some damage over time and start immediately, but only lasts for a few posts. Counter this with standing solid.
Frozen slows your movement speed, increases actions you need to perform, and makes you vulnerable. Counter this with speed.
Bleeding reduces your energy slowly. Counter this with survival.
Poison slowly damages you over time, but lasts very long. Counter this with reflexes.
Feared makes you panic, tremble or even run away. Counter this with standing solid.
Distracted makes you disoriented, lost, prevents you from casting any spell and interrupts anything you were casting. Counter this with concentrate.
Stunned makes you unable to do anything. Counter this with balance.
Blinded makes you blind momentarily, but you can still move and everything. Counter this with keen eye.
Cursed weakens your stats, depending on the curse.
Sleep makes you unable to do anything, but you regain health and wake up on hit.
