Glossary Empty Glossary

The Arena is inspired from roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft, and a variety of other multiplayer games. As such, for those who come from an exclusively roleplaying background, but never played games, some terms that are common to this type of game will be new to you. To help you figure them out, this Glossary is here for you to reference in such an event. If there is any terms you would like to see added to the list, pm me and I will add it.




DM/GM:
- Dungeon master/Game manager. The person that leads behind the scenes, the storyteller, and possibly even a character in your part at the same time. In a dispute, the GM/DMs word is law.

Mob:
- A group of enemies that is controlled by the DM.

PC:
- Acronym for Player Character, Refers to characters that a person controls through the Arena. Synonymous with Player.

NPC:
- An acronym for non-player character. It is another character that is controlled by the DM.

Threat:
- A term given to describe an enemy's tendency towards aggressive action towards you. It measures the likelihood that a mob will attack you. The more threat you have, the more likely a mob will charge at you. Threat depends on how intimidating you are, how much damage you deal and taunting abilities or other actions that can be perceived as an aggressive action.

Aggro:
- A similar term to threat. It is short for aggression, and describes tendency to being attacked by a mob.

Tank:
- Named after the real life vehicle known for it's ability to take a massive amount of damage and survive. It can be used to describe any person, but is usually referred to towards a player's style of play. It is used to describe a player whose role is to protect his teammates and absorb damage.

DPS:
- An acronym for Damage Per Second, which is a rate that a person that deals damage over time. player whose role it is to deal as much damage as possible to mobs.

Healer:
- Describes a role in a party that revolves around keeping his/her teammates alive and well.

CC:
- Acronym for Crowd Control, this details a role in a party that keeps the mobs in check, make sure they stay where they have to stay or go where they have to go, inflict status effects, deal damage to many mobs at once via area of effect abilities, etc.

PVP:
- Acronym for Player Versus Player. Denotes battles between players.

PVE:
- Acronym for Player Versus Environment. Denotes battles between players and non-player characters. (mobs, bosses)

HoT:
- Acronym for Healing Over Time. It pertains to the rate of health points restored over a set amount of time.

DoT:
- Acronym for Damage Over Time. It pertains to the rate of damage dealt over a set amount of time.

Critical:
- A term used to denote a specific result on a roll. A critical success or critical hit denotes a very high if not max score , and a critical fail is the same only for lowest score. For example, on a 6 sided dice rolling a 6 would be a critical success, and a 1 would be a critical fail.

Proc:
- Short for Procurement. It describes an effect that relies upon a chance to activate, such as a 10% to burn an opponent.

Party:
- A term used to refer to a group of player characters working together including yourself.
