Burning Bridges

Chapter 1

Jeremie groaned, throwing his earpiece to the ground in frustration. He hung his head in his hands, weaving his fingers into his awry hair. He yawned, gaping blearily at the screen of the supercomputer in front of him.

The only thing this multi-agent system is succeeding at is taking years off of my life. Jeremie thought with a disgruntled sigh, punching a few choice words into the keyboard.

Unbeknownst to Jeremie, the force that he was trying to destroy, was closer than he thought. A dense smoke crept into the room, forming an impeccable replica of the boy in the chair. Silently the clone approached his victim, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder.

Jeremie jumped, "Aelita!" he bleated, "You scared me."

The clone laughed, a malicious grin on his pixilated face. Jeremie tensed, slowly turning around to come face to face with XANA. His scream of surprise was muffled by XANA's palm as he pinned Jeremie to his seat.

Jeremie struggled against his captor as XANA rapidly typed codes into the supercomputer, his elongated fingers a blur.

"Just relax." came XANA's evil, gravelly voice.

Jeremie fought to break free, but his efforts were fruitless.

XANA chuckled, bringing his devious face inches from Jeremie's.

"Have a nice trip." XANA spat, slamming his fist onto the enter key.

The entire factory shook, plaster falling from the dilapidated ceiling. XANA freed Jeremie, vanishing in an instant. Jeremie desperately clung to the chair, frozen in fear and confusion. Suddenly, a blinding light swept the room, enveloping Jeremie in its wake.

The boy's world became as black as night.
