XANA's Gender
Personally, I think XANA is gender neutral but has its maleness moments. Your thoughts?

Re: XANA's Gender
Since Xana's a virus it can't have a gender as such. The Lyoko Warriors refer to is as a he under the general don't-know-gender-call-it-a-he rule, but I like to refer to Xana as a she.
It's an interesting topic, even Moonscoop can't make up its mind on which word to use.

Re: XANA's Gender
I think X.A.N.A is gender nuetral because he's a computer program/virus but he's mostly male. The only contradiction to that is the fact that in Fight To The Finish, when he's destroyed,he forms a face and the face looks like it has long, feminine hair to me.

Re: XANA's Gender
I'm thinking he's a male. Because the episode we actually saw him in he looked like a boy. But then again, he could have just been in another form since he looked sort of like Jeremy.

Really though, since it's impossible for a programme to have a gender as such, I would say that XANA is genderless. I use either "it" or singular "they" when I need to refer to it with pronouns anyway.
Given humans' tendency to anthropomorphise non-human entities/concepts, it figures that the Lyoko gang would just ascribe XANA a pronoun though.

Re: XANA's Gender
I guess that does make sense Soul. But at the same time I just can't seem to think of him (sorry, force of habit) as a female or just an it. Just because of the seemingly male qualities.
For ex: The movie flubber had a robot with female qualities, so I thought of her as a female.
But all in all, we don't know for sure what XANA's gender is (if it has one) so everyone's opinion could be correct!

Re: XANA's Gender
I've always seen XANA as a female. But that's the mold, hiding the true form of XANA, which is gender nutural.
Re: XANA's Gender
In my story, XANA is male.
however in one story I accepted that XANA was female because of how the author portrayed her possessiveness. *shiver* I never want a girl like that

Re: XANA's Gender
Xana is indeed genderless since it is bodyless. the reason the Lyoko Warriors reffer to it as 'he' is because there is no French nueter word and then it translated that way.
I, however, due to some wonderful work on DA by Sylntnyte support the female head cannon for Xana. She is female in most of my stories, except the ones a close friend who supported male Xana wanted me to write.

The process of dubbing and making the scripts for Code Lyoko is convoluted. English is involved in even the French dub.
I think of XANA as an "it," but, as male is the "default" gender in English, I have no compunctions over referring to XANA or having XANA referred to as male.

Re: XANA's Gender
I'd never thought of that, Dandelion, but that's a good point. Any creature we don't know the gender of, we tend to call "he." But we know that XANA has no gender, as he is a computer program, but he is sentient and vastly intelligent, so he has the of semblance of life.
For example, when I'm working with iOS, when I get frustrated, I might complain, "The program isn't doing what I tell it to do! Why won't it work?" However XANA has too many qualities which make him seem alive, so the Lyoko Warriors would naturally use "him" to describe XANA.
And Miz makes a good point too, the French word for it is "Il." It can be gender neutral, and used in a sentence where gender is dubious. For example, "Ils mangent." This means "They eat." It could be a man and a woman eating together. But that same word (Il) also means "He." The phrase "Ils mangent," could be said of two men eating, or a man and a woman eating. Never for two women eating. In that case, it would be "Elles mangent."
To say, "He is going to the supermarket," the French would be, "Il va au supermarché." Notice the term "Il," at the beginning of the sentence. It means both "He," and "It" at the same time, so when the French people watch Code Lyoko, they could view XANA as an it. But in the translation to English, we have no such word, and the translators choose one- He or It. They chose He, indicating that this is canon "gender" of XANA, although it is clear that he really has no gender.
Have I confused anyone with all this mess?

Re: XANA's Gender
I don't know why exactly, but when I think of Xana... I think female. I know that one of my stories that I've written I've portrayed Xana as female. Also I feel like writing her instead of him is more natural. I think I have a Xana focused gift around here somewhere... But I also do use he/ it when talking to others. Usual in a discussion.

I agree with elly, Xana is a fem-ish name to me and it originals is Xanadu which is a girls name. Well on my research i found that xana have a meaning to it and i kinda forgotten it. i think it Latin name
Here the link of the meaning because my laptop some how can not copy and paste

Re: XANA's Gender
"Xana" is in fact a female name. "XANA," however, is an acronym. They (MoonScoop) got XANA from "Xanadu," the original name of Lyoko. Xanadu being a genderless noun, not a name. They didn't get it from the girl's name, "Xana," either.
However since XANA has no gender, it certainly isn't wrong to call it a she, however the show makes it clear that it's referred to as male, at least by the Lyoko Warriors.
My opinion.

Re: XANA's Gender
Just to say... This is a program in BASIC:
XANA isn't just any program, and it's the most advanced program on Earth (assuming CL really happened). But yeah, whatever, it still doesn't have a gender.

print "Hello world!"
end

Re: XANA's Gender
I've always thought Xana was a he...or at least refurred to in the masculine tense. Since, as Atlas said, it is a computer program. I could be wrong but don't the LW and Franz Hopper refer to Xana as a he? Though, I could see why Xana could be referred to as a she.
Re: XANA's Gender
In the series, XANA is often referred to as a 'he'. Some people argue it's a 'she', though, since typically in Latin when a name ends in -a it's usually feminine. Some people also suggest that in "Fight to the Finish" when the spectre flies out of William, that it takes on a feminine face for a split second, and that this is sufficient evidence to conclude that XANA is in fact female (despite the fact that the face turns masculine almost immediately and remains masculine much longer than it was feminine).
I don't really know. I don't really care. All I know is XANA is a demonic artificial intelligence that keeps messing around with those kids' lives because it wants to take the world. And in most of my fanfictions, the characters (and perhaps me the narrator) will refer to XANA as a 'he' simply because they did so in the original series.

Interesting. I've never noticed that before. But yeah, I don't really care either, I just was curious.
Re: XANA's Gender
I don't if anyone here has ever watched/come across Black Butler, but in the first series there's a character/s called Ash and Angela. They're one person, well, angel and since angels aren't supposed to have a fixed gender, they have the ability to sort of switch depending on what's best for the situation. I don't know why but I have that feeling if XANA were to ever become human, they'd be a very manipulative person who'd use the fact that they have no specific gender to stick with to their advantage, kinda like its body being a polymorphic specter so it can change into something else easily.

Re: XANA's Gender
I have never been entirely sure. When I first watched the show I was about 8. I always thought of XANA as a female. I have no idea why but it felt more appropriate.
Now I think he is neither gender and simply has a tendency. As XANA was programmed it only had one person to talk to once it reached sentience. That was Franz Hopper who was a man. XANA was like a child and probably tried to imitate Hopper and naturally is a bit more male than female in tendencies.
